EVANSTON, WYOMING JUNE 17 - JUNE 21 2008
IF YOUR PLANNING TO ARRIVE AT THE SALT LAKE CITY AIRPORT AND DO NOT WISH TO RENT A CAR WE CAN ARRANGE TO PICK YOU UP AND TRANSPORT YOU TO EVANSTON AND RETURN YOU TO THE SLC AIRPORT AFTER THE CONFERENCE.
Evanston was "end of track" on the Union Pacific RR in 1868 and a few years later was designated as a locomotive service point, thus securing its future. Since the 1840s the most heavily traveled transcontinental routes in the US from the Oregon Trail to the Lincoln Highway have crossed through southwestern Wyoming including the Mormon, California, Cherokee, Overland Stage and Pony Express trails. Topography here offers relatively easy passage through the Rocky Mountains. At this conference you can walk on several of the trails, as well as, the Lincoln Highway.
The conference main events will take place in the restored historic UPRR Machine Shop located in Evanston's Roundhouse and Railyards that is home to one of the few remaining full functioning turntables west of the Mississippi. You will have an opportunity to "take a spin on the turntable" and tour the Roundhouse where major restoration is in progress.
The 2008 conference will be unique in several ways. The tours will take you through both rugged canyons and desert badlands. Each attendee will receive a canvas tote bag replica of the old desert water bags that hung from car radiators traveling the early Lincoln Highway. All participants will also receive a replica of the recently discovered rare Lincoln Highway Notable Service medallion given to distinguished members of the LHA. Individual crystal-like acrylic reproductions of an early antique car that traveled the Lincoln Highway will grace the banquet tables. Three dinners, two breakfasts and lunches will engage your taste bids in real Mountain Man cuisine.
The 2008 conference will also be home to the 1st Annual Art and Photography Show with a Lincoln Highway theme. For information on exhibiting original art or photos contact the coordinator, Kell Brigan, at happytrailz@inbox.com. Applications are due by April 10th. This will be a chance for artists and photographers to share their work with conference goers.
The conference hopes to put on display the original Wyoming/Nebraska and Wyoming/Utah metal highway signs that stood on the respective state lines in the early days of the Lincoln Highway.
Take the opportunity to visit with Evanston LHA member merchants who will be providing prizes for visiting their shops and competing in a Lincoln Highway poker run.
